Central Bank Digital Currencies: considerations for a not-too-distant future

Resumo

As Moedas Digitais de Bancos Centrais (MDBC) vêm sendo objeto de crescente interesse por parte dos bancos centrais de economias avançadas e emergentes. Tendo em vista a relevância e atualidade do tema, o presente artigo visa organizar o debate acerca do que se entende por MDBC a partir da literatura internacional recente, bem como analisar as possíveis implicações decorrentes da sua implementação. Uma vez que as MDBC comportam diferente configurações, ainda há muitas incertezas acerca dos potenciais custos e benefícios das mesmas. A definição de como serão as MDBC pode ter implicações profundas sobre diferentes aspectos, como a resiliência do sistema financeiro doméstico, a eficácia da política monetária, a funcionalidade do sistema de crédito e dos meios de pagamento, entre outras. Apesar das incertezas associadas às diferentes arquiteturas possíveis, o presente trabalho conclui que as estratégias dos bancos centrais em relação às MDBC podem ser vistas como defensivas, uma forma de acompanhar as mudanças tecnológicas e culturais e, ao mesmo tempo, tentar conduzir o processo e manter seu papel central no sistema financeiro.
